This rare and magnificent Quran lectern from the Mughal period in India reflects the elegance of Islamic art with its hand-painted decorations and Arabic calligraphy. Surahs from the Holy Quran are meticulously inscribed on both sides.
One side features Surah al-Fil and Surah al-Falaq. These two surahs symbolize God's protection of His servants from evil and His divine power.
The other side features Surah al-Nasr and Surah al-Maun. These surahs exhort God's victory, generosity, and compassion towards humanity.
The interior of the lectern is inscribed with 144 sacred inscriptions. 99 of these are the Asma al-Husna, or the beautiful names of God. The remaining 45 phrases are divine attributes that express God's power, generosity, and grace—for example, "God is the All-Powerful, the All-Generous."
This handcrafted work is adorned with a rich color palette dominated by black, white, red, and gold. Floral and ivy motifs represent the garden of paradise.
This lectern is not only a religious object but also one of the most exquisite examples of Mughal calligraphy and illumination.
Condition: The original painted surface is well-preserved and appropriate for its age.
