Rare British metal steamer trunk “Alfred Burton” – c. 1890–1910 – original faux-wood paint A truly exceptional Victorian travel trunk, entirely made of metal and hand-painted to imitate fine wood grain — a typical feature of English craftsmanship from the late 19th century. The inside bears the handwritten name “Alfred Burton”, very likely the original owner — perhaps a traveller or seafarer who used this trunk for personal belongings on voyages. Such markings were common among travellers during the age of steamships and railways. Features: • Origin: United Kingdom • Period: c. 1890–1910 • Material: painted metal (faux-wood finish) • Colour: brown wood-grain exterior, blue painted interior • Lock: original brass clasp (no key) • Dimensions: approx. [insert exact cm here] • Condition: very good original condition with beautiful patina and light wear consistent with age Story: These domed or “camel-back” trunks were designed to shed water and prevent stacking, making them perfect for maritime travel. The vibrant blue interior served both decorative and protective purposes, guarding against rust and humidity. The original paintwork and the inscribed name make this trunk a unique survivor of the Victorian travel era — equally at home as a decorative statement piece, storage chest or conversation object. A rare and authentic piece of British travel history – full of character, craftsmanship and charm.Collector of authentic objects with soul, history and character. Each piece tells its own story – from forgotten journeys to masterful craftsmanship. I carefully select items that evoke emotion and proudly carry the marks of time.
