Jûbako (contenedor de comida en niveles) - Laca, Madera - Japón - Siglo XIX (Final del período Edo / Inicio del período Meiji)
A beautiful lacquered four-tiered jûbako 重箱 (tiered food container/stacked picnic box) with a fitted cover, rectangular in form.
The exterior is adorned with a delicate design of ancient pine trees 松 (matsu) extending across the sides and top, with Japanese dwarf bamboo 笹 (sasa) covering the lower areas.
Executed in golden hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief lacquer), takamaki-e 高蒔絵 (high-relief lacquer), and nashiji 梨子地 (sprinkled gold highlights) on a glossy black and brown rôiro lacquer 蝋色漆 (rôiro’urushi) ground.
The interior is finished in a striking crimson-red lacquer, with golden fundame 粉溜地 (matte lacquer) rims.
Period: Japan – 19th century (Late Edo period / Early Meiji period)

Height 33.6 cm, Length 23.4 cm, Width 21.9 cm.
Considering its age, in very good condition with minimal traces of wear consistent with age and use, like small flints of lacquer along the rims. Please look at the photos for a clear condition reference.
Hanami, as a major festival celebrating one of the four seasons, came to be associated with tiered food boxes called jûbako. Often made of lacquered wood, the tradition of stacking them was not only for functionality but also to symbolize the desire for good fortune to “accumulate.”
