Description: Orangeware pottery figural vessel lid, depicting a deity in prone position, resting on his elbows and holding a knife in both hands. Wearing a jaguar skin, with his head projecting from the jaguar’s toothy mouth. The head is hollow and contains a rattle ball. Overall scattered encrusted surface deposits. Ancient loss to approximately half of the lower cover portion, otherwise intact. A rare and very interesting example.
Provenance: Acquired at Arte Primitivo Auction 2004, Ex-Private Florida collection. Ex-Barry Kernerman collection, Toronto, Ex-Samuel Dubiner collection, Tel Aviv, Israel, acquired in the 1960’s.
