Background and Context: Françoise Gilot and Pablo Picasso were partners for roughly ten years. Their relationship began in 1943, during the German occupation of Paris, when Gilot was a young emerging painter. Javier Vilató was the son of Picasso’s sister, Lola. This made him Picasso’s nephew. Vilató was a talented Spanish painter who moved to Paris after WWII. Picasso supported his artistic development and helped him integrate into the Parisian art scene. They shared a close relationship, both familial and artistic. In the summer of 1948, Robert Capa spent time in southern France, where he documented the private, everyday life of artists, writers, and friends living or vacationing along the Riviera. During this period: He frequently visited the studios and homes of modern artists. He photographed them in relaxed, informal settings rather than formal portraits. He captured an emerging postwar bohemian lifestyle centered on creativity, friendship, and Mediterranean leisure. The photograph titled “Pablo Picasso with Françoise Gilot and Javier Vilato” became one of the most iconic images from this period.
