A fantastic Kutani’ware porcelain vase by the Living National Treasure artist Tokuda Yasokichi III 徳田八十吉 (1933–2009). The vase of elegant form with an ovoid body with broad shoulders transcending into a narrow neck ending in a flared mouth, standing on a sturdy circular foot raising de bulbous body. It is covered overall in a rich, lustrous saiyû 釉 (colored glaze) with finely crackled streaks in varying hues of green and blue. The base is left unglazed and signed in red ‘Kutani Masahiko’ 九谷正彦. Complete with a signed and inscribed wooden tomobako 供箱 (storage box) and a Japanese leaflet detailing the artist’s biography. Tokuda Yasokichi III 徳田八十吉 (1933–2009) was designated a Living National Treasure 重要無形文化財保持者 in 1997 for his mastery of the innovative saiyû 彩釉 (colored glaze) technique, developed from the traditional Kutani-glaze enamels handed down through three generations of his family. Born as Masahiko 徳田正彦 in Ishikawa Prefecture, he was a celebrated master of the Kutani pottery tradition and succeeded his father in 1988, thereafter adopting the name Tokuda Yasokichi III. His works are represented in major international collections, including the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Over his career, he received numerous awards, notably the Grand Prize at the International Pottery and Porcelain Exhibition.
