Walter Dexel (1890–1973) was a German painter, commercial graphic designer, and art historian, considered a major figure of Constructivism in Germany. Born in Munich, he studied art history before becoming a largely autodidactic painter.
Influenced initially by Cézanne, Cubism, and Expressionism, he transitioned to abstract Constructivism in the early 1920s. Dexel applied his geometric style across various fields, including typography, stage design, and advertising. He is credited with inventing the lighted street sign (1925). He was a key collaborator on the "New Frankfurt" social reform project and worked closely with Bauhaus and De Stijl artists like Theo van Doesburg. Dismissed from his teaching post by the National Socialists in 1935, he later focused on curating and publishing works on the history of domestic design.
