A rare Spanish polychrome papel-mâché figure or Cartón piedra of the Madonna Spain, 17th century A charming devotional figure depicting the Madonna in prayer, modelled in papel-mâché and retaining traces of the original polychromy in deep reds, browns and earthy tones. The figure is finely accented with glass-bead eyes, adding a delicate and expressive touch to the facial features. The Virgin is shown standing upright, hands folded in devotion, her long robe draped in soft folds around her feet. The rear shows characteristic textured modelling of the veil and hair. Age-related surface wear, small cracks and losses consistent with devotional use and fragile material. Dimensions: approx. 12.5 cm high x 4.5 cm wide A scarce survivor of Spanish folk devotion.
