Born in Cateau Cambrésis, Matisse began painting during a convalescence in 1890 and decided to become a visual artist, despite the opposition of his parents. He studied at the Julian School and the School of Fine Arts in Paris, where he received classes from the symbolist painter Gustave Moreau. Matisse is known for his innovative use of color and form in his paintings, sculptures, and drawings. He was one of the leaders of the Fauvist movement, characterized by the use of pure colors and a representation of the violence of emotions. His work is based on simplification, stylization, and synthesis. As for the valuation of his works, purchase prices range between 150,000 and 300,000 euros for a Matisse painting at the dawn of Fauvism, while Fauvist canvases and Orientalist portraits from the 20s and 30s reach prices between 1 and 5 million euros. In 1952, Matisse created the “Nu Bleu” series. Composed of four works, these pieces were made from gouache papers in blue, then cut out and glued onto clear paper marouflé on canvas. Each work represents a naked woman sitting raising her right arm behind her head. This series is one of the most famous of Matisse and reflects his mastery in the use of color and form.
