Crafted from sugi (Japanese cedar) or keyaki (zelkova) wood and finished with a deep reddish-brown lacquer, the box features multiple drawers of varying sizes, some lined with antique washi paper — including one sheet containing calligraphy or accounting records. It also includes a hidden upper compartment accessible via a sliding lid and removable interior cover, which would have been used for concealing valuables or ink tools. The iron fittings — hinges, drawer pulls, and decorative lock plates — are original and show beautiful aged patina, consistent with 19th-century Japanese hardware.
