With Manicomio, Raymond Depardon documents the last years of psychiatric asylums in Italy during the late 1970s, a period of sweeping reform following the passage of Law 180 (Basaglia law), which abolished traditional institutional psychiatric hospitals. Encouraged by psychiatrist Franco Basaglia, Depardon photographed patients, interiors, and daily life in asylums such as those in Trieste, Venice, Naples, Arezzo, and Turin, capturing a vanishing world of confinement and marginalization.
