Contino Reserva 2017, produced by Viñedos del Contino in Rioja DOCa (Rioja Alavesa, Laserna), is a single-estate wine (“château” model) based primarily on Tempranillo with smaller proportions of Graciano, Mazuelo, and Garnacha. It is aged for around 18 months in oak barrels (mainly French, with some American). The winemaking approach emphasizes parcel selection and terroir expression, resulting in moderate extraction, relatively higher acidity, finer-grained tannins, and well-integrated oak. In contrast, Imperial Reserva 2016 from CVNE (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España) in Rioja DOCa (Rioja Alta, Haro) follows a classic Rioja blending model, based on Tempranillo with Graciano and Mazuelo.
