Cary-Gould Pocket Microscope – Burr Walnut Case – England, 1830s
An increasingly scarce opportunity to acquire an original Cary-Gould type pocket microscope, dating to the 1830s—one of the most iconic portable scientific instruments of the early Victorian period.
These compact microscopes, developed by Charles Gould for William Cary in London, were the essential field tools of 19th-century naturalists. Today, complete or near-complete examples with original case are becoming markedly harder to find—especially in untouched, honest unrestored condition like this.
Executed in lacquered brass and housed in a (rare) richly figured burr walnut case, this piece embodies both scientific ingenuity and refined craftsmanship. The ingenious design allows the instrument to be fully dismantled and reassembled using the case itself as a base—an elegant and highly collectible feature.
This set remains approximately 80% complete, retaining key original elements including the pillar, stage assembly, and multiple accessories. The survival of the original fitted interior—with clear impressions of the original layout—adds to its authenticity and collector appeal.
Good, honest antique condition. Slight warping to the case and expected age wear. Brass with attractive, untouched patina.
