Harry op de Laak (1925-2012) - Vrouwelijk naakt

Splendid drawing of a naked woman Directly from the artist, so it's new. Henricus Maria Mathijs (Harry) op de Laak (Venlo, June 1, 1925 – Horn, January 16, 2012) was a Dutch painter. He produced a large number of works in ceramics, wall paintings, concrete reliefs, glass windows, and tapestries (gobelins). These works were applied in and around buildings. His work is included in the national collection and in municipal and private collections across the Netherlands, including in the collection of the Limburgs Museum in his hometown Venlo, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and Museum Henriette Polak in Zutphen. Course In Venlo he was a pupil of Sef Moonen, and afterwards at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam under Professor Heinrich Campendonk. In 1944 he received the Vrouwe Vigeliusprijs. In 1952 he received the Koninklijke Subsidie voor de Schilderkunst. Career After completing his training in 1951, Op de Laak positioned himself as a monumental artist. He was an active member of the Association of Practitioners of Monumental Arts. During the reconstruction period he contributed to new building projects by the government and industry, where works in concrete, glass, and ceramics found application on, in, and around buildings. For the First Christian LTS Patrimonium he created several reliefs, including an interpretation of the Creation story (1956). In 1957 he completed his distinctive facade artwork Nature & Technology on the facade of the then Caltex headquarters in The Hague. In 2017 the now vacant office building, adjacent to Kennedylaan and Conradkade, was demolished to make way for a new apartment complex. Prior to the demolition, the enormous concrete graffiti was carefully removed and, after cleaning and renovation, reinstalled on the prominent side facade (Kennedylaan) of the new residential complex. The reinstallation was celebrated with a flashing light projection, and at that presentation the city of The Hague underscored the importance of preserving monumental art for the city. From 1960–1961 dates his Verdrijving uit het paradijs at Johan Jongkindstraat 127."} He was, at the same Rijksakademie where he trained, a professor of Monumental and Decorative Painting from 1973 to 1985. After his retirement he moved to Beesel, where he lived and worked for the rest of his life. On May 7, 2005, during the exhibition marking his 80th birthday at the Nieuwe Kerk, he was knighted as a Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau. He died in Hornerheide Nursing Home in Horn.
