Game box old oak? Massively carved by hand, attributable to work from Southern Germany (Black Forest), late 19th – early 20th century, around 1880–1910.
Rare salon box made of solid walnut, entirely hand-carved. The lid features a foliage motif in high relief, framing playing-card emblems (hearts, clubs, diamonds, spades), a pattern consistently repeated on the entire object. The sides and front are also carved, bearing witness to high-quality workshop craftsmanship intended for a bourgeois clientele.
The interior is particularly remarkable and constitutes a feature of great rarity: it is compartmentalized and includes several small independent boxes for counters, each finely hand-carved, with a wood-veneer-like grain pattern and applied playing-card emblems. This level of interior finish greatly surpasses common gaming boxes of the period, usually provided with simple compartments.
Solid construction, precise adjustments, hand-beveled corners, original brass hinges. Beautiful uniform patina, evidencing age and careful use of the object. The set is complete and functional.
Wood probably old walnut, fine and tight grain, perfectly suited to detailed sculpting.
Approximate dimensions: 26.5 × 17.5 × 6.5 cm.
A rare and high-quality salon game box, both decorative and functional, representative of the know-how of Southern German workshops at the end of the 19th century.
The photographs are an integral part of the description.
IMPORTANT: the lid has a deformation visible in the photos and the key is missing
