About LRA 904 Gran Reserva, 1995 ------------------------------------ Thanks to the even distribution of rainfall throughout the year, the good flowering, perfect ripening, and impeccable health of the grapes upon arrival at the wineries, and the optimal weather conditions during the harvest, we have an exceptionally high-quality vintage and a new production record in Rioja. The harvest began in Rioja Baja around September 10th, finishing in Rioja Alta and Alavesa at the end of October. The favorable weather in October (dry and hot) resulted in spectacular development of the grapes in terms of sugar and anthocyanin content, along with good acidity and excellent health. The base variety is Tempranillo (90%) from the Briñas, Labastida, and Villalba areas, complemented by 10% Graciano from our Melchorón I and II vineyards in Briones and Rodezno. After alcoholic and malolactic fermentations, it was transferred to semi-new American oak barrels in June 1996. Up to the bottling date (July 2000), it underwent eight manual rackings. In order to preserve the organoleptic components as much as possible, this wine was subjected to very gentle filtration, which may result in some sediment with age. Tasting Notes Ruby red color with brick-red highlights, medium-bodied, clean, and bright. Intense, very penetrating, and complex aroma, with hints of spice, leather, and ripe fruit. On the palate, it is powerful yet very silky, smooth, and round with a perfect balance between tannins and acidity. Excellent and very persistent finish with notes of licorice. Triumph. 93 Points Vinous Ruby-red. Potent bouquet of almost exotic floral and dark fruit aromas, accented by sweet underbrush and sexy oak spices. Densely packed and concentrated, boasting an abundance of cherry and dark berry flavors joined by rose and violet pastille, vanilla, mocha and red licorice. Wonderfully silky tannins give a structural underpinning to the finish of this rich, densely packed beauty. This could be enjoyed now or stashed away for another decade.
