A highly sought-after Saint-Joseph from Domaine Pierre Gonon, one of the most respected and iconic estates of the Northern Rhône.
The Estate
Located in Mauves (Ardèche), this family-run domaine of 11 hectares is now managed by brothers Pierre and Jean Gonon, representing the 4th generation. Over the past decades, they have elevated the estate to cult status through rigorous vineyard work and a deep respect for terroir.
The vineyards are farmed organically (certified since 2010), with manual work on steep slopes, ploughing, compost use, and no pesticides or insecticides. Yields are carefully controlled, and grapes are harvested by hand.
The Wine
This Saint-Joseph Rouge is made from 100% Syrah, sourced from several key terroirs:
* Granite soils near the historic Saint-Joseph hillside
* Red clay with stones (Les Oliviers)
* Old vines on gneiss soils in Saint-Jean-de-Muzols
Vinification is traditional and low-intervention:
* Indigenous yeasts
* Partial destemming (~25%)
* Gentle extraction (limited pigeage and remontage)
The wine is then aged for around 10 months in 600L demi-muids (non-new oak), preserving finesse and balance.
Style
The Gonon style is renowned for its precision, freshness, and elegance, favoring balance over power, with remarkable ageing potential. Production remains very limited, making these wines increasingly difficult to source.
