His work gained international exposure with invitations to major art events, including participation in the Venice Biennale in 1970 and again in 1976, marking him as a significant figure in postwar European art. Gordillo has received numerous prestigious awards, such as the Spanish National Award for Plastic Arts (1981), Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes (1996), and the Premio Velázquez de Artes Plásticas (2007), the highest honor for Ibero-American artists. His art is held in major Spanish and international collections, and he is regarded as a central influence on multiple generations of contemporary artists.
