DESCRIPTION
Burmese statue depicting a monk or worshiper, a disciple of the Buddha; these statues were offered by the faithful to honor him, in lacquered wood and gold leaf.
They were placed near the Buddha statue in temples or monasteries.
A complete set could include up to 7 figurines representing the most important disciples who received their teaching from the Buddha himself and venerated in Burma.
According to the donors' wealth, they could give a single statue or several.
Very beautiful lacquer and original gilding; the monk’s name is inscribed on the front of the statue, it is Sariputta, one of the two main disciples of the Buddha. The inscription is old but later than the statue, in fact the base has been re-lacquered, as is often the case.
Circa the first half of the 20th century, region of Bagan.
19.5 cm in height, 8.7 cm in width, 10 cm in depth.
Old decorative object.
SELLER
For more than 30 years, I have traveled throughout Southeast Asia, especially Burma, for pleasure, for encounters, but also to collect old objects, increasingly difficult to find. These objects were purchased in the Bagan region in 2020. I have been collecting these statuettes since my first trip to Burma in the early 1990s, and the merchants I work with collected them for me before the coup.
Jean Dumoulin.
CONDITION
Condition is acceptable for an object of this era but shows signs of age; gilding is partially worn in some places, which does not take away from its charm (see photos).
Professional packaging, traceable shipping.
