"During the decade between 1955 and 1965, Düsseldorf-based Horst H. Baumann was one of the most innovative and successful photographers of his generation. Right from the start, the self-taught artist developed a visual language that differed radically from the trends and fashions of the era.
Baumann’s early black-and-white photography is distinguished by a genuine interest in social themes on the one hand, and a consistent quest for a unique artistic voice on the other. He discovered compelling subjects even in the most mundane settings through the deliberate use of selective focus, bold cropping, and unconventional perspectives. Children at play, fairgrounds, parades, the Rhineland Carnival, as well as the worlds of mining and industry, became his first self-chosen themes. Baumann participated in exhibitions, won awards, and was a constant presence in the press during those years. At the same time, he began to establish himself as a color photographer. His images from the world of Formula 1, in particular, brought him international renown and—in retrospect—mark him as a pioneer of color photography as an art form. In his later years, Baumann was primarily known to the public as a laser artist.
This volume rediscovers this exceptional photographic talent and, for the first time, pays tribute to his contribution to "New Color" photography."
