HW Imperator Collector's Lighter (Germany, ca. 1914)
This is a unique historical piece, produced by the Heinrich Wittener (H.W.) workshop, which combines a sophisticated mechanism with an artistic design of the period.
Automatic Button Mechanism: The lighter works through an automatic system: when the side button is pressed, the lid is released under the tension of a spring. Due to its age, the mechanism arm does not slide correctly, being partially seized. This malfunction is common in pieces over 100 years old and is most often caused by oxidation of the internal spring or by old stone residues that block the fluid movement of the arm.
Precious Finish: The body of the lighter is partially covered in silver leaf, a thick plating technique that allows for a much deeper and more detailed relief engraving than regular plating. Silver covers the main faces, providing a luxurious look, while the edges and corners show the natural patina of the base metal (brass).
Floral Decoration: The entire case is decorated with a complex pattern of arabesques and vegetal motifs, typical of the late Baroque or Art Nouveau style. The engraving is also present on the lid and base, providing a special visual unity.
Markings and Authenticity: On the side, there is the manufacturer's logo (the hand with the torch/lightning bolt in a circle) and the inscription "Patent 3", confirming that it is an original model, protected by a patent at the time.
Conclusion: It is a rare piece, ideal for collectors who appreciate early German mechanisms. Although the arm requires professional cleaning to become fully functional again, its aesthetic and historical value is remarkable due to the generous layer of silver leaf
