Japanese Matcha Tea Bowl - Nishio-yaki by Ohno Shozo
This is an authentic Japanese Matcha-wan (tea bowl) crafted by Ohno Shozo, the master of Nishio-yaki (Nishio ware) from Aichi Prefecture. Nishio City is renowned for its premium matcha tea production, and this pottery style was established by Ohno Shozo after he discovered high-quality clay at the foot of Mt. Hachimen in the early Showa era.
The bowl features a warm, earthy glaze with a serene, hand-painted crane (Tsuru) on the front, a traditional Japanese symbol of longevity and good fortune. The shape is robust yet elegant, with visible finger-ridges (rokuro-me) that provide a comfortable grip. The "wari-kodai" (split foot) is a distinctive feature of high-quality tea bowls, adding a sense of rustic strength to the piece.
The underside of the wooden box lid contains a inscription in calligraphy. The accompanying document explains the history of Nishio-yaki, noting that the artist spent over 30 years perfecting his unique techniques after arriving in Nishio in the early 1930s.
