This lot is composed of 2 saltglazed beer mugs created around the 1850s in Regensburg region of Germany. These beer steins are also known as clay mugs and they are usually richly decorated in elaborate scenes featuring various themes.
1. Brown Beer Stein
Decorated with three separate scenes in relief, the mug has a slight connical shape narrowing towards its upper edge. The highly detailed scenes are composed of medieval characters, surrounded by plant formations and architectural elements, while its central figure Gambrinus - "The God of Drinking", is portrayed as a crowned man toasting with his right hand. Its pewter lid is also decorated with an architectural structure encasing a writing with the name of its past owner probably. Condition of the item is excellent, without damages or restorations, showing normal signs of use, consistent with age.
Dimensions: Height - 16cm, Base Diameter - 9.5cm, Weight - 712g.
2. Gray Beer Stein
Decorated with a complex scene with numerous characters displayed in a format wich clearly makes allusion to "The Last Supper" of Leonardo Da Vinci, giving this mug religious connotation. Condition of this item is good, without damages or restorations, presenting a minor hair line at its mouth, while missing its pewter lid.
Dimensions: Height - 13cm, Base Diameter - 10cm, Weight - 539g.
