Michał Żytniak (1980) - Wagary (Playing Hooky)

Michał Żytniak (born in 1982) is a Polish artist, painter, and musician whose artistic roots are deeply embedded in the neighborhood street culture of Częstochowa (Poland) at the turn of the century. Growing up amidst a fascination with design, fashion, and street graffiti, he developed his own uncompromising visual language. His paintings are highly intuitive, unconventional compositions in which he consciously avoids calculation and well-worn clichés. He creates authentic art that serves as a plastic extension of his keen urban observations. Today, Żytniak is one of the most recognizable figures on the Polish art scene. His broad spectrum of creative pursuits attracts art collectors, enthusiasts, investors, and individuals previously unacquainted with the art world. Acrylic on canvas. Signed lower left: M. Żytniak. Warsaw 2019. Dimensions: 46 x 55 x 2 cm. Very good condition. Never exposed to direct UV radiation. Never restored (does not require it). Acquired directly from the artist for the private collection of Norbert Zbiciak (Zbiciak Curated) in 2020. Fine, barely visible cracks in the paint layer on the figures and in the upper part of the painting, no discoloration, no minor imperfections. Artwork stretched on a stretcher bar. Unpainted sides. The artwork comes with the artist's biography (A4 format), printed by Zbiciak Curated on heavy, cream-colored paper. Secure, insured worldwide shipping. Double protection using cardboard edge protectors, cardboard sheets (or chipboard sheets depending on the destination country). Country of dispatch: France. The painting “Wagary” (Playing Hooky) (2019) is a strikingly authentic and melancholy study of contemporary youth, serving as perfect evidence of Żytniak’s rare instinct as a vigilant observer of daily life. Utilizing his signature synthetic and simplified visual language, the artist captures an intimate, almost cinematic snapshot on the borderline of rebellion and existential confusion. Suspended within a minimalist, pastel-pink, nearly sterile space, the central focus of the composition is a monumental, dark sofa. It is here that the core drama unfolds: the figures of two teenage girls caught in a moment of emotional crisis. The titular "playing truant", traditionally a symbol of freedom and youthful carefreeness is sharply contrasted here with the bleak reality of prematurely entering an adult world of coping mechanisms to deal with tension. With remarkable visual empathy, Żytniak captures the psychological dualism of this scene. One of the figures experiences a state of emotional breakdown, weeping through so-called "drunken epiphanies", while the other, leaning over her, becomes the embodiment of raw, peer solidarity and comfort. The narrative is completed by two minimalist, blue shapes at the base of the furniture, legibly symbolizing empty bottles. The artist dispenses with unnecessary architectural or perspective details, shifting the entire thematic weight onto the relationship between the figures and the emptiness that surrounds them. A raw contour and intuitively applied patches of color lend the piece an expressionistic, almost chronicler-like character. Playing Hooky is not merely a record of a specific domestic situation. It is a universal, non-judgmental story about escape, loneliness, and the fundamental need for closeness within the microcosm of the younger generation.
