First edition of España Grand Tarde, one of the major photobooks by Japanese photographer Ikko Narahara, published in 1969 following his travels through Spain during his stay in Europe from 1962 to 1965. The book is divided into three sections: “Grand Tarde,” depicting the confrontation between bullfighters and bulls; “Fiesta,” documenting the San Fermín festival and its famous running of the bulls in Pamplona; and “Vaya con Dios,” portraying the landscapes and atmosphere of southern Spain. Narahara’s predominantly black-and-white photographs are characterised by their grainy texture, strong contrast and intense Spanish sunlight. The striking book design by Mitsuo Katsui incorporates numerous gatefold pages, fluorescent endpapers and bold graphic elements. Includes the separate booklet Yakusoku no Tabi (The Promised Journey), containing a commentary by Narahara.
