An exceptional and iconographically rare late 18th-century North Russian Orthodox icon depicting the "Adoration of the Icon of the Mother of God of Smolensk by the Holy Princes of Smolensk". The icon features a sophisticated two-tier composition. The upper celestial register shows a finely painted "Icon-within-an-icon" representing the miraculous Smolensk Mother of God (Hodegetria), flanked by two bowing angels in a gesture of deep veneration (Adoration). The lower register depicts the prominent Princes of Smolensk – the holy patrons of the city of Smolensk – gathering to pay homage to the sacred image. The central figure is identified by the Church Slavonic inscription as Saint Prince Theodore (Theodor) of Smolensk, surrounded by his sons, the holy princes David and Constantine, alongside other accompanying saints. The icon is meticulously executed in egg tempera on a solid wooden panel with a traditional levkas gesso ground. The entire background and halos are masterfully executed in rich gold leaf, creating a stunning luminous effect. The vestments feature detailed drapery and highly expressive, dark-toned facial features typical of 18th-century workshop mastery. The icon is in good antique condition with a beautiful natural age patina and genuine craquelure across the surface. There are minor historical wear marks, small paint flakes, and slight restorations consistent with its age, preserving its authentic character and historical integrity. The wooden panel remains stable.
