1964 Vinos Culebrón - Brotons, Fondillón - Alicante Gran Reserva - 2 Pullot (0.7 L)
20/20 Jancis Robinson: This is the first Spanish wine to receive the coveted 20 points from Jancis Robinson. An eternal, historic, and mysterious wine capable of enduring not just decades, but centuries. In the words of Ferran Centelles, sommelier at El Bulli for over 10 years and Robinson's right-hand man in Spain: "Have you ever tasted a better passage of time? Do you know what a long aging process tastes like? If you want to experience time in your glass, this is the wine to try. The Fondillón Brotons 1964 is a unique wine: complex, perfect, and exciting. Personally, awarding 20 points to a wine makes me a little dizzy. I don't want to get into philosophical discussions about whether perfection exists or not, or if a wine can be perfect. But, when tasting Brotons, I ask myself: what can we ask of this wine to make it better? Honestly, I don't know."
Bottled in February 2024 directly from the barrel. Aged for 60 years: 1964-2024.
Bottle in outstanding condition: maximum fill level, immaculate pale red color, new capsule, legible label. Fully mature and therefore ready to drink now, or to age in the cellar for the next 50-100 years. A wine to age for decades!
100% of the wine comes from the 1964 vintage. This year is unanimously considered the best of the 20th century in Spain. Aged in century-old Spanish oak casks with plenty of sediment from old Fondillón wines, which the winery owners consider an important part of the wine's terroir. For the first 2-3 years, the wine was analyzed barrel by barrel every 2 months to test its storage potential. Aged for 60 years, so far!
Fondillón is one of Europe's most historic wines, a unique rancio wine made exclusively from overripe Monastrell grapes from the Alicante region. Unlike Sherry and Port, which are fortified by adding alcohol, this is achieved thanks to the naturally high level of sugar that converts to alcohol during fermentation.
In the 18th century, Fondillón de Alicante was one of the most famous and prestigious wines in the world, valued even more than the wines of Sauternes, Jerez, and Port. It was said to have been a favorite of Louis XIV of France and Elizabeth I of England, and featured on banquet menus at other royal households. It was mentioned in the writings of Dumas's "The Count of Monte Cristo," as well as in the works of Shakespeare and Dostoevsky, where it was also known as Alicante. Fondillón's disappearance was a consequence of the destruction of the vineyards by the phylloxera plague in the late 19th century.
* Includes a classic glass stopper for each bottle.
