Known for their strong stage performance, the band had recorded several shows privately or broadcast them on the radio, but were not enthusiastic about recording a live album until their Japanese record company decided it would be good for the public. The album was an instant commercial success, particularly in the US 6 Japan where it was accompanied by the Top 5 hit "Smoke on the Water", and became a solid bestseller in the 1970s. In a 2012 Rolling Stone readers' poll, "Made in Japan" was voted the sixth best live album of all time.
