INTRODUCTION
Impressive Mongo bronze anklet (“konga”), valued for its bold geometry, weight and deeply aged patina.
CONTEXT / FUNCTION
In central Congo, heavy bronze ornaments such as anklets were worn as personal adornment and could serve as markers of status and identity. Their significance often lies as much in their material value and weight as in the clarity of form and the patina acquired through time.
AESTHETIC / TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
This anklet is formed as a thick, open cuff with a broad banded profile and strongly defined edges, creating an architectural, sculptural presence. The surface shows a rich range of dark brown tones with areas of oxidation, consistent with considerable age.
CONDITION
Overall: good to very good, with age-related wear.
• Surface wear, scratches and oxidation consistent with long-term use and age.
• Minor irregularities and edge wear consistent with an old bronze ornament (see photos).
