Trent Parke est né en 1971 et a grandi à Newcastle, en Nouvelle-Galles du Sud. Utilisant le Pentax Spotmatic de sa mère et la buanderie familiale comme chambre noire, il a commencé à photographier vers l'âge de 12 ans. Il a débuté sa carrière comme photojournaliste de presse et, en 2007, est devenu le premier Australien à devenir membre à part entière de Magnum Photos.

Parke est l'un des photographes les plus novateurs de sa génération. Il est connu pour ses photographies poétiques, souvent teintées d'humour noir, qui dressent un portrait émotionnel et psychologique de son pays d'origine, l'Australie, de l'outback du sud à ses plages animées. Bien qu'ancrées dans le documentaire, ses œuvres se situent entre fiction et réalité, explorant les thèmes de l'identité, du lieu et de la vie de famille.

Pendant deux ans, Trent Parke à photographié l’Australie. Il ne s’agit pas là d’un reportage traditionnel mais d’un vrai regard artistique sur son pays d’origine de la part du photographe ; photos en noir et blanc.

"Even before I start, I had the feeling that Australia was a deeply dark and mysterious. I felt that something was wrong, that we are heading towards a wrong direction. Australia is a country dark! That shit permanent but there is so far away that you do not even hear about in the big cities, wild animals, the racial tensions between whites and blacks, abuse of alcohol and other substances, the harsh treatment of women … I know this is a disk with its droughts, its storms and its poverty. But then there is a form of freedom, feeling of choking persists in certain behaviors. Rural folk live by standards that people in the cities do not understand. But you see, it is precisely these attitudes that have enabled these people to survive for so long. There is no malice, it is instinctive, it’s just a way of being … It is Australia, exactly what I saw. I feel deeply that Australia has reached the end of an era … even if the campaign is still intact, the innocence is gone." (Trent Parke)
