Authentic Edo Period Samurai Helmet Kabuto – Iron Suji Kabuto with Gilt Fukigaeshi
筋兜 Suji Kabuto
This helmet features multiple trapezoidal iron plates stacked vertically, with rivet heads flattened to create an upright joint. It is characterised by its light weight and high functionality.
This authentic Samurai helmet (Kabuto) dates to the Edo period, most likely from the 18th to early 19th century, reflecting the refined craftsmanship achieved during Japan’s long era of peace. The helmet is a classic Suji Kabuto, constructed from multiple trapezoidal iron plates arranged vertically to form the bowl, with carefully flattened rivet heads creating strong, upright joints. This structural method results in a helmet that is both lightweight and highly functional, balancing protection with comfort, and represents a fully developed form of Japanese helmet construction. The iron bowl is finished in deep black lacquer and fitted with an original hachimanza at the crown, while the wide fukigaeshi are richly finished in gilt, adding a dignified ceremonial presence. The shikoro is composed of evenly formed tiers with refined lacing, emphasizing visual harmony rather than battlefield austerity, a hallmark of Edo-period armor made for status, ceremony, and display rather than constant warfare.
