Chronology: 6th Century B.C.
Material: Heavy Terracotta
Dimensions: Height 16.0 cm
Description:
A significant and highly collectible ancient Greek terracotta figure of a seated Kore, dating to the Archaic Period (6th Century B.C.). This piece is a classic representation of early Greek votive sculpture, displaying the characteristic hieratic pose and the solemnity typical of the era.
The deity is depicted enthroned with an impressive wide-winged backrest, wearing a high polos (sacred headdress) and a thick garment with stylized folds. The formal rigidity and the frontal composition are definitive markers of the 6th-century B.C. aesthetic, common in the prestigious coroplastic productions of the Ionian and Magna Graecia regions.
The statuette is a solid, hollow-cast work featuring a large original firing vent at the base. The surface is remarkably preserved, showing an authentic, deep archaeological patina with thick ancient earthly encrustations and traces of original dark pigments. A powerful and imposing specimen of early Mediterranean devotion.
Condition Report:
Exceptionally solid and intact. No modern restorations, no repairs, and no re-attachments. A rare and pristine example of Archaic Greek art.
Provenance Statement:
The piece comes from an old European collection formed in the 1970s.
