The famous statuette of a "flying deer" on the hood is the main symbol of the legendary Soviet car GAZ-21 "Volga" (produced from 1956 to 1970).
Character history and meaning
The coat of arms of the city: Deer is the historical symbol of Nizhny Novgorod (formerly - Gorky), where the Gorky Automobile Plant (GAZ) is located. The deer figure first appeared on the GAZ-12 ZIM car in 1950, and then became the calling card of the first and second series "Volga".
Symbolism: In culture, the deer epitomizes speed, grace and nobility, which highlighted the status of a new car.

Why did the deer disappear from the hood?
In later models (third series GAZ-21, since 1962) the figure was replaced by a flat emblem ("drop"). Main reasons:

Safety: When a pedestrian was involved, the protruding metal figure sustained severe injuries.
Aerodynamics and theft: The deer created unnecessary spatter on the windshield in the rain and was often a target for vandals and collectors.
