Historical background
Maria Stuart (1542–1587), better known in English as Mary, Queen of Scots, was one of the most famous and tragic figures of European royal history. She became Queen of Scotland shortly after her birth and later also Queen of France through her marriage to King Francis II. After political turmoil and rebellion in Scotland, she was forced to abdicate and fled to England seeking protection from her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I. Instead, she was imprisoned for many years and eventually executed in 1587 after being implicated in plots against Elizabeth. Her dramatic life and fate made her one of the most well-known royal figures of the 16th century.
