**
Helmut Andreas Paul Grieshaber or HAP Grieshaber (1909 –1981) was a German artist best known for his large-format woodcuts.
He developed a signature stylized aesthetic through his printmaking, rendering his subjects in more than three colors at a time and employing Cubist-inspired aesthetics. Often depicting themes of peace and harmony throughout his work, Grieshaber was a lifelong pacifist and activist who continuously spoke out against war, nuclear plants, and careless environmental stewardship. Over time, his prints began to incorporate more color, as well as elements from nature and mythology, and were sometimes reminiscent of the works of Marc Chagall. Grieshaber’s unwilling military service under the Nazi regime, coupled with his subsequent imprisonment and forced labor in Belgium, led him to begin protesting war through his art practice. Achieving widespread appreciation, he received many awards and was the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, and was notably included in the 1959 and 1964 editions of documenta.
