Les photographies de Hockney

David Hockney
Yomiuri Shimbun /1986/Japanese/240*250*10

“Hockney's Photographs,” a photo book by British artist David Hockney. This book is a catalog published in conjunction with a solo exhibition held in Japan in 1986. The exhibition was first unveiled in London in 1983, subsequently toured overseas, and took place following the publication of the photo book *Cameraworks* (1984). Hockney had been taking snapshots of friends and the like since the 1960s, but he had no interest in photography itself; he used the images merely as a source of ideas. However, when the Centre Pompidou in Paris took an interest in his photographs, Hockney set aside his paintbrushes for two years starting in 1981 to devote himself entirely to photography. The works featured here are “Polaroid collages” and “photo collages” created under Hockney’s Cubist-inspired philosophy: while a single photograph cannot capture everything a person saw or the passage of time at that moment, combining multiple photographs allows for a more accurate expression of that person’s “vision” and “time.” This is a valuable catalog featuring 101 masterpieces—true gems that explored the multifaceted and multilayered nature of humanity and art, breaking new ground in the art of photography.
