This type of composition—featuring a roughly drawn car on a dark or black background—belongs to Basquiat’s final phase. During these years, his work became more minimal, with isolated symbols and stark contrasts. The car can be interpreted as a symbol of urban life, movement, or even status, rendered in his signature raw and expressive style.

In his final years, especially after the death of Andy Warhol in 1987, Basquiat withdrew from much of the art world. He worked intensely and privately, often painting through the night while listening to jazz musicians like Charlie Parker. Some friends noted that his late works—like this one—feel more solitary and symbolic, as if he was distilling his imagery to its essentials.
