Description fournie par le vendeur
An elegant and highly decorative naturalistic composition depicting a perched bird meticulously created from genuine butterfly wings. The artist has skillfully arranged the naturally coloured wings to recreate the bird’s plumage, producing remarkable texture, depth and iridescence while preserving the delicate vein patterns unique to each specimen.
This type of artwork became especially popular during the mid-20th century, particularly from the 1950s through the 1980s. It originated in tropical regions where butterflies were abundant, producing handcrafted compositions for the international decorative art market. These works were often framed locally before being exported to Europe.
Rather than traditional painting, this piece employs the meticulous technique of butterfly wing collage (Lepidoptera mosaic). Individual butterfly wings are carefully trimmed and assembled to create a realistic image, with the natural pigmentation of the wings providing every colour and pattern. The result is both a work of art and a celebration of the extraordinary beauty found in nature.
The composition is presented in its original vintage frame, enhancing its refined decorative character. It remains in very good vintage condition with light, age-appropriate wear to the frame and backing, consistent with careful preservation over time.
A charming and unusual decorative artwork that beautifully combines craftsmanship, natural history and vintage interior design, making it an attractive addition to a cabinet of curiosities, tropical-inspired décor or any collection of naturalistic art.
