An impressive pair of authentic French faience ewers produced by Masse Frères in Desvres, one of France’s most renowned centres of artistic ceramics.
Executed in the Renaissance Revival style, these richly decorated pedestal ewers are entirely hand-painted in vibrant polychrome enamels with gilt highlights. They feature expressive mascaron heads, mythical birds, scrolling foliage and elaborate Renaissance-inspired ornamentation, reflecting the historicist tradition for which the Desvres workshops became celebrated during the mid-20th century.
Each ewer bears the hand-painted Masse Frères signature beneath the glaze and dates to approximately 1950–1960. Beautifully crafted and highly decorative, they represent an excellent example of French artistic faience from the post-war period.
Condition: Both ewers remain in good vintage condition with expected signs of age and use. One ewer has a restored handle, and the other has a small chip to the foot; otherwise, the hand-painted decoration and gilding are beautifully preserved throughout.
