The subject matter was inspired by the artist's own experience of imprisonment by the Gestapo in 1937. A dark, dramatic, and oppressive social and political satire, expressed through lithography and pen and ink drawing. It combines detailed realism with grotesque, allegorical, and surrealist elements to critique power, dehumanization, and 20th-century German society.
