Pisa Cathedral
"950° ANNIVERSARIO" (950th Anniversary)
The cathedral's foundation stone was laid in 1063 following a naval victory against the Saracens in Palermo, making 2013/2014 the exact 950th anniversary window of the complex.
The Artwork: The reverse design beautifully showcases the full profile of the Romanesque cathedral facade alongside the base of the iconic Leaning Tower. At the bottom center, it displays the official stylized monogram of the O.P.A. (Opera della Primaziale Pisana), the historic institutional fabric authority that has managed and protected the Piazza dei Miracoli monument complex since the 11th century.
Iconography and Design Details
The design depicts a historic religious architectural scene framed within a decorative circular border:The Central Panel: The square high-relief panel depicts a classic Biblical scene set against an arched background. It portrays an angel standing over an arched structure, under which a figure is resting, referencing sacred foundations or local Pisan religious history. Above the figures, the Latin phrase "VIATORIBUS SALUS" (Safety to Travelers) is inscribed.
The Outer Inscription: Encircling the central design, the phrase "QUO DOMUS HAEC EST FUNDATA ET ALTIVS ERECTA" translates to "By which this house was founded and erected higher."
This explicitly celebrates the architectural legacy, foundational strength, and historical longevity of the Pisa Cathedral complex over its 950-year history.
Decorative Embellishments: The medal features stylized rosette flower patterns separating the words around the border, with a high-relief textured rim.
