Complete unofficial pattern coin set issued in 2004 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Monaco Grand Prix, first held in 1929.
The collection comprises nine pieces:
eight fantasy or pattern coins with values corresponding to 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents and 1 and 2 euros;
one larger commemorative medal marked 5 and bearing the inscription “Grand Prix Monaco 1929–2004”.
The larger medal depicts historic racing cars on Monaco’s famous street circuit, with the harbour and characteristic Monte Carlo surroundings in the background. The remaining pieces display various Monégasque motifs, including the Prince’s Palace, the coat of arms of Monaco, portraits and palm trees.
The set is supplied in its original red velvet presentation case. The inside of the lid features a gold-coloured outline of the Circuit de Monaco. The exterior bears the inscription:
“Grand Prix de Monaco – 75ème anniversaire – 1929–2004”.
This privately produced pattern issue was released in a limited edition of 3,999 sets.
Important: these are unofficial pattern or fantasy issues. They were not issued by the official Monégasque monetary authority and are not legal tender. They are collectible tokens bearing euro-style value markings.
Condition: good collectible condition. The pieces show some superficial scratches, discolouration, oxidation and occasional dark spots. The large commemorative medal also displays minor signs of age and handling. The red presentation case shows light storage wear and some surface lint but continues to display the collection attractively. No separate certificate is included.
