This specimen was struck during the reign of Ranavalona III, the last queen of Madagascar. The year 1883 corresponds to the first French invasion of the island and the start of the First Franco-Malagasy War, which ended in 1885. After several attempts and tensions, Madagascar became a French colony in 1896. Queen Ranavalona III was deposed and exiled the following year to La Réunion and then to Algiers. Madagascar did not regain its independence until 1960.
