Provenance & Marginalia: Rich provenance history with multiple early handwritten ownership marks and dates:
Hand-written note dated 1645 on the title page area ("AN. 1645").
Ownership inscriptions from the Cnattingius family (Sweden), including entries dated 1696 (Lars Danielsson Cnatting), 1728 (Andreas Lars Cnattingius), 1877, and 1931 (Uppsala).
Description:
A very rare 16th-century printing of the complete works/orations of the ancient Greek orator Isocrates, edited/translated by the famous humanist Hieronymus Wolf.
The book retains its original or early flexible parchment (vellum) binding. Inside, it features extensive early provenance spanning over three centuries of Swedish family ownership (Cnattingius lineage from Uppsala/Vadstena). Includes printed Latin text with Greek passages, introductory dedications to Emperor Maximilian II, and distichs on the Habsburg emperors.
Condition:
Good antique condition considering it is over 450 years old. Vellum binding shows natural age patina and light wear. Pages are complete with minor age-toning and foxing. Ink ownership entries on endpapers and title page. Strong binding structure. Number off pages 1128 + index + main pages
