The C5647 is the HP DLT4000 20/40Gb internal SCSI tape drive.
The DLT4000 full height tape drive is an early generation of the Quantum DLT family and was manufactured by Quantum for many vendors including HP, Compaq, IBM, Dell, Tandberg, Overland and many others for use in libraries, autoloaders and of course as standalone internal and external drives.
The DLT4000 offers 20GB native capacity or 40GB compressed capacity on a single tape at speeds of up to 3MBps or 10.8GB per hour.
The DLT4000 was available in 50 pin SCSI-2 Fast, single ended or differential interfaces.
The DLT4000 has read and write backwards compatibility with earlier DLTtape formats.
This and later DLT tape drives had tape loadable firmware, allowing easy updates to the drive’s microcode, so that additional capabilities could be added by merely changing software. The same technique also permitted customization to the SCSI interface parameters.
Also notable was the DLT4000s use of advanced linear recording technology, precision tape guiding system, and adaptive control mechanism, all of which were retained in future generations of DLT tape drives as well as superior error detection and correction and extensive embedded diagnostic/self-test software.
