Une photographie originale et atmosphérique réalisée en chambre noire par Michael Joseph, datant de septembre 1987.
Un modèle nu est assis, posé sur des rochers au bord de la mer, une main reposant sur une grande coquille, l’autre relevée dans ses cheveux. Sa pose sculpturale, l’eau scintillante et la tonalité chaude, presque bronze, confèrent à l’image une qualité distinctement intemporelle et élémentaire – mer, peau et coquille.
Il y a quelque chose d’à la fois glamour et légèrement surnaturel dans la composition. La figure soigneusement mise en scène contraste avec le mouvement agité de l’eau derrière elle, tandis que la conque introduit une note joueuse, presque mythologique.
La photographie porte le caractère incontestable d’un tirage traditionnel en chambre noire : grain, ombres profondes, variations tonales chaudes et texture analogique magnifiquement imparfaite. La bordure sombre visible renforce encore son caractère fait main.
Plus important encore, cet exemplaire est personnellement signé et légendé par Michael Joseph sous l’image, y compris la date “Sept 87” – donnant à l’œuvre une connexion particulièrement directe avec le photographe et son archive.
État
Il s’agit d’une photographie vintage originale approchant les quarante ans et n’est pas en parfait état. L’image et le montage présentent des marques liées à l’âge, des taches, des irrégularités tonales et des signes de manipulation. Le verso du support montre des taches plus prononcées, des marques et une usure générale, comme illustré clairement dans les photographies.
Ces imperfections n’ont pas été cachées ni restaurées ; merci d’examiner attentivement toutes les photographies dans le cadre de la description de l’état.
Malgré son âge et ses imperfections, il demeure une œuvre en chambre noire vintage frappante, signée et très personnelle – sensuelle, surréelle et indéniablement de son époque.

My father, Michael Joseph, was a London-based advertising photographer, active from the mid-1960s to the early 1990s, and best known for his photographs for the Rolling Stones’ Beggars Banquet gatefold.
My continuing mission is to share what we affectionately call “the other photographs”: the lesser-known treasures from his extraordinary archive — original darkroom prints, test prints, alternative frames from major shoots, his celebrated group compositions, and more intimate, personal images.
For this special Solo Seller Auction, I am particularly excited to include a selection from Michael’s 1964 Vietnam archive — photographs that have never previously been seen or offered for sale. These remarkable images reveal a very different side of his work, made when he was just 23 years old.
Alongside Michael’s authentic vintage darkroom prints, I am also presenting a new generation of works: striking prints on aluminium and my own handmade cyanotypes, created from his original negatives and transparencies in the Dordogne sunshine. Some are made on vintage photographic paper retrieved from Michael’s own working library, bringing the archive quite literally into a new generation.
Together, the collection brings photographic history and contemporary experimentation side by side — from unique vintage prints made by Michael himself to bold new interpretations of his remarkable archive.
I hope you enjoy discovering these photographs as much as I enjoy bringing them to light — sometimes preserved exactly as Michael made them, sometimes given an entirely new life.
All works are carefully protected and packed with the attention appropriate to collectible photographic artworks.
