Signed in title page by Bettina Rheims (1952). In perefect conditions, as new, 50 colour photograpgs. Unconventional portraits of famous women (Béatrice Dalle, Vahina Giocante, Ophélie Winter, Laetitia Casta, Asia Argento, etc.) and others who are unknown.
How do women feel in expensive clothes? What do women do with the clothes, and what do the clothes do to women? »Héroïnes«, Bettina Rheims' 2005 photo series of 50 women in the latest creations of Parisian haute couture, provides astonishing and provocative answers to these questions. Because, as is hardly to be expected from Bettina Rheims (born 1952), this is not simply about fashion photography. Instead, she let her models, who are by no means all professional models - like Laetitia Casta or Milla Jovovitch - do what they wanted with the fine textiles and what suited the photographer's deconstructive concept. Bettina Rheims ignores common ideals of beauty and refuses to accept the fashion industry's claim to perfection and glamour. Her images, staged at a high aesthetic level, subtly undermine both the commercial and the voyeuristic or male gaze and open up fascinatingly disturbing insights into the world of haute couture and those who wear it.
