"Conserving" by Daniel & Geo Fuchs is a renowned 1998 photographic trilogy that explores the themes of death and preservation through images of fish, animals, and human bodies preserved in formalin or alcohol. Daniel & Geo Fuchs are a German artist duo known for their conceptual photography. The project is divided into three sections: *Conserving Fish*, *Conserving Animals*, and *Conserving Humans*. The subjects are specimens and bodies sourced from natural history museums and anatomical collections, some of which have been preserved for over 300 years. Through the skillful use of lighting and large-format imagery, the preserving fluids and containers become almost invisible, lending the subjects a sculptural, floating appearance; the colors evoke the atmosphere and tones of Hieronymus Bosch’s paintings, balancing a sense of morbidity with unexpected visual beauty. The work addresses a subject often considered a social taboo—death and bodily preservation—inviting the viewer to engage in silent contemplation that transcends time and space.
