Laodikeia on the Lykos was founded by the Seleukid king Antiochos II and named for his wife Laodike. Situated at a crossroads in Phrygia, it prospered through trade, banking and the production of fine black wool. Its wealth enabled it to rebuild without imperial assistance after the earthquake of AD 60. Under Roman rule, it became a prominent regional centre and later numbered among the seven churches addressed in the Book of Revelation.
