Royaume de Russie. Gros butin d’accumulation de 210 pièces d’argent en fil (

Russian Tsardom. Large Hoard Accumulation of 210 Silver Wire Coins ("Cheshuya" / Fishscale Coins).
An extraordinary and substantial numismatic study lot consisting of 210 authentic medieval silver wire coins. These intriguing hammered pieces, colloquially known as "cheshuya" (fishscales) due to their unique size and oval shape, trace the historical trajectory of Russia from a fragmented system of principalities into a unified Tsardom.
Hand-hammered from drawn silver wire, these coins represent the active circulating currency spanning the 16th and 17th centuries, including the historic reigns of Grand Duke and Tsar Ivan IV "The Terrible", Feodor I, Mikhail Fedorovich (the first Romanov Tsar), Alexei Mikhailovich, and early issues of Peter I "The Great" before his westernizing currency reforms.
• Obverse Imagery: Features a hand-hammered depiction of the Tsar as a stylized mounted horseman charging right. Depending on the specific ruler and denomination (Denga or Kopeck), the rider is depicted wielding either a lance (spear) or a raised saber.
• Reverse Inscription: Features multi-line Cyrillic text displaying the ruler's name and official imperial titles (e.g., "Grand Duke Tsar of All Russia").
Lot Breakdown & Technical Details:
• Total Quantity: Exactly 210 pieces
• Composition: Silver (High-purity medieval silver alloy)
• Manufacturing Technique: Hand-hammered wire technology (Drawn, cut, and struck manually with dies)
• Average Dimensions: Approx. 8 mm to 15 mm per coin
Condition Report for Bidders:
The hoard arrives in an unsearched, honest mixed historical condition (Fine to Very Fine). As is standard for this primitive minting technique, the coins exhibit varying degrees of off-center strikes, partial legends, and typical irregular shapes resulting from the manual cutting of the silver wire. A vast majority of the pieces display highly crisp central details, including sharp horseman figures and highly legible Cyrillic text blocks. A few specimens exhibit ancient pierced holes, indicating they were historically repurposed as traditional bridal or decorative attire jewelry. Natural, rich cabinet patina and minor localized earthy deposits are present across the collection, affirming their authentic archeological nature.
This is a phenomenal investment and attribution lot for specialists. Bidders are kindly requested to thoroughly examine the multiple comprehensive high-resolution group photographs to evaluate the vast array of mint marks, legends, and conditions before bidding.
